Montesquieu is a critically important person to think about in the context and the many legacies of enlightenment. In some ways, he resembles an early version of somebody like jefferson. On the other you certainly see some of the most nefarious ideas of what becomes race that were actually vehiculed by him. He was fascinated by a climate, and clearly, the idea of degeneration is linked to climate. And regarding africans, and he doesn't call people africaans, he talks about people who are suffering from the torrid zone.
