Over 70 percent of the volcanic activity on earth accrurs under water, but most people don't know it because they never get to see it. These vents are referred to as black smokers because they are basically chimneys that spew out superheated water. Scientists have learned a lot from these underwater hot springs, but we didn't even know they existed until about 50 years ago.
