A house for Alice does recall those sort of 19th century novels where there's this panoramic sweep of what is happening in wider society and then the personal stories set against that. I feel like with this book I did want a larger canvas and I wanted this big host of characters and I wanted it to be more expansive, so I feel like I achieved that but I feel like there's something that I haven't achieved.
