67 - Crossing a Barrier
The Curious Clinicians
What Happens to the Capillary Blood Brain Barrier?
Tumors can poke holes in the plastic wrap and allow fluid and protein to leak into brain tissue. Tumors elicit an inflammatory response that breaks up some of these tight junctions, causing gaps between endothelial cells when those gaps are called fenestrations. Steroids like dexamethasone are going to reduce edema and vascular leakiness around tumors in the brain partly by their anti-inflammatory effects.
