St. Thomas Aquinas describes human nature as being a composite of contrary elements. The soul is a spiritual substance, but that by nature is immortal, unlike the the souls of vegetables, plants or animals. On the other hand, the body is a physical substance that is made of matter. And so it is naturally mortal.
