For me a big thing was horse games. They were quite a few because there was also like a real time where you could just get a demo of a game anywhere. There's a whole pocket of those games around various celebs and toys for F capital G4 girls that were really pleasurable and really really delightful. The horse games is an interesting one because it is spoke to an ache. Not just a fantasy the way Harvest Moon speaks to a fantasy no, a need. But an ache as in real life they are large scary untamable expensive animals but don't love you. I find them very frightening. No no no dead dead stare. I'm very scared. Yeah
Gaming used to be for everybody, like Lego. But somewhere around the early noughties gaming became extremely gendered, with first person war shooters dominating mainstream gaming and “girl” games arrived. We talk The Sims, Harvest Moon, Pokemon, Stardew Valley, tv and movie franchise games, horse riding games, a little bit of Zelda, and a little bit of Skyrim. We also discuss Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, and finish with recommendations for new gamers. Recs include:
Wandersong
Chicory
A Short Hike
Cult of the Lamb
Boyfriend Dungeon
Going Under
Wychwood
What Remains of Edith Finch
