On a very biological level, your body's fight or flight response is triggered. To deliberately deescalate how you are responding mentally will start to bring down the physical response as well. For some people that looks like saying, okay, I need to go be in a room by myself for five minutes. We need to pause this conversation and come back. It can be making a joke in the middle of this really tense conversation with someone that you're disagreeing with and just breaking the tension.
