The Effect of Social Housing on the Housing System
The federal government bailed out of social housing in 1994. People didn't start really paying attention to it till middle class people couldn't buy condos anymore. There's no way the market can build housing that is built to current standards, he says. Even if you get free land and a bunch of breaks on a bunch of different things, you still cannot get the rents down to what a truly poor person can pay,. Some provinces like BC and Quebec have put a fair amount of money in recent years into social housing but it's not enough.
