The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics
The temperature is a measure of the average speed of the particles. If A is hotter than B, energy moves from A to B until A is no longer hotter than B,. nor B hotter than A. What is it exactly that has become equal between them? More precisely, we say that A and B have the same temperature when they are in thermal equilibrium. The zeroth law implies the existence of a thermometer. It's the device in thermal equilibrium with its surroundings. So none of that statement of the law even implies theexistence of particles you will notice.
