Australia-India Relationships - What's the Point?

Most theoretical models of alliances posit the logic that the client state gets the benefits of aggregated capabilities from the patron to improve deterrence and its chances of winning a wall. But unless we want to get nuclear weapons, the defence of Australia inevitably requires seeding some sovereignty to a patron. I would see a new mechanism for the United States to exert influence over their Australian partners rather than the other way round because that is certainly where the power balance lies.
