The stock market is a way of allowing people who have built companies to diversify their risk. If i start a company and it's really successful, i own it. But if it crashes and burns, and like stock people start wanting what i make, then i lose everything i have. The nasdak composite serves his kind of a daily snapshot to see how well the market is doing for the nasdak exchange. It tracts about three thousand companies traded on the Nasdak. So that do jones is another market index. And out of about six thousand or so publicly traded us Companies, it tracks the top 30.
