The History of the Germanic Tribes
The Germans did use coins, which found their way in from the outside. They didn't mint their own coins and they didn't generally use them in their economy. Germania would continue to be underdeveloped compared to France to the west. It wasn't really until the Franco-Prussian War in the late 1800s that the balance of power began to shift to the Germans.
