The Importance of Distinguishment
Lying to oneself is often in service to reducing the anxiety that we feel when we are actually in conflict with the culture. And there's something very real and present about that. We want to preserve our own good opinion of ourselves. So this idea of misrepresenting ourselves outwardly, but also misrepresenting ourselves inwardly. Becoming persona identified with our perceived positive qualities and denying the negative ones. It all adds up to self deception and loss of consciousness, a loss of awareness.
