Edwin Morgan's Translation of Beowulf

The Scottish poet Edwin Morgan's translation of Beowulf was published in 1952. He experienced a kind of writer's block from his experience in the Second World War and translating Beowulf brought him back to his poetic voice. The poem is infused with this sense of transience and the ominous shadow of death that's there in the Old English, but that resonates with Morgan because of his experiences.
