The Differential Between HSV and Herpes Simplex Virus

Dr. Shafer: The vast majority of lesions that are in the vulva or in a genital area are related to HSV or herpes simplex virus. More than 90% of these lesions are going to be HSV, he says. But if patient has lesion that is not characteristic of HSV and isn't responding to typical treatments for herpes, then my differential becomes much more broad, Dr. Shafer says. Chancroid is caused by the bacterium hemophilus dukray; it's declining worldwide but still appears sporadically.
