The Myth of the American Dream

I appreciate the social value that some myths play, the pro-social behavior, or simplifications. But a lot of myths are not only bullshit, but actually harmful. We can say things, but realize it that our tongue is slightly in our cheek with it and not go all the way to Plato's noble lie. I think that's where we go wrong, where people know its faults and knowingly spread it to people as if it were true for the purposes of manipulating behavior. The general idea is true, there is social mobility in America more than historically been elsewhere,. Unfortunately, probably less than there was 50 years ago.
