Xenophon's Foraging Expedition

Xenophon's troops set fire to everything that they could so as to give the effect that his army was very large. By now, the dissident generals had learned their lesson about not working together and an assembly was held in which they resolved that in the future, anyone who mentioned dividing the army should be put to death. But for the next several days, they had unfavorable sacrifices while supplies continued to dwindle. Nian decided to lead all comers on a foraging expedition and about 2,000 men went out to gather provisions. Farnabassus' cavalry is said to have killed about 500 of the foragers, while the other 1500 took refuge in the hills.
