Most of the work I did in neural networks back in the day was based on the assumption that no, you can't just train a big random kind of incoherent formless blank slate neural network to do anything. On the other hand, Gary Marcus might be right that you actually need a radically different approach. But at this point, I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me that much if GPT eight or nine proved to be able to do pretty much everything that humans can do without having a whole bunch of intrinsic structure.
