In the, you know, in the 30s he had achieved modest fame as a mime. And there's this sort of much quoted description of his act by Collette saying how marvellous it was and that he'd invented a new art form or something. He would do things like pretend to be riding a horse or pretend to be having a boxing match with an invisible adversary or whatever. It's quite hard to see what people found so extraordinary but I think it has to do with, I know nothing about the subject.
