China's Failure to Mediate in South Sudan
I think one of the reasons why China got involved in its not super successful attempt to mediate in South Sudan years ago was that it was so heavily invested in the South Sudanese and Sudanese oil nexus. I don't really believe that China and especially Xi Jinping has the death necessary to handle this kind of situation. It's interesting that we've had a lot of high level visitors to Africa this year from the US, now from the Europeans, the Japanese, quite a few leaders. The Chinese on their high level visits seem to have dialed back. So Africa doesn't feel to be as much of a priority diplomatically as it did in the past.
