Adaptive Optics Is a Very Deep Subject
Adaptive optics is a mix of many different subjects put together to accomplish one goal. If the atmosphere wasn't there, we would not need adaptive optics whatsoever at all. When you take a picture of something, the light passes through an aperture which has a given size. An airy function kind of looks like a Gaussian, but it goes up, there's a peak in the middle and then it ripples outwards in a two dimensional oscillation.
