The use of customer funds from what's called a SEG account is the ultimate no-no in finance. MF Global made money because the cash was there and they could earn income from extremely low risk securities such as treasury bills, so like a three month treasury bill or even a 18 day money market fund. After the financial crisis, interest rates went down to zero, so there was really no money to make investing.
