Brahms - The Third Movement
Brahms writes 30 variations over that small bass line, which is called a pasacalia. Each one of them is different in character, intensity and color. Here it seems as if brahms has no qualms over letting out all his energy passion and even rage. There's a wonderful video of the great russian conductor, evgeni revinski, rehearsing this piece where he tells the violins that they must play the passage with a forty degree incelsius left hand.
