Pre-Platonic Philosophy
Pre platonic philosophy emerged through various figures who attempted to capsilatet workings of the natural world within thought. They all had a universal principle for interpreting and representing reality. Another example, besides thales, that you are probably familiar with is democritus, who said all matter was made of atoms and void. This is a material nation for matter. So if you ask, what is matter? Democritus says, everything is made of smalling, smaller building blocks of matter. And so in that respect, some would say that atomism is still the dominant viewpoint to day.
