The Colisseum in Rome was preserved because some of the early Christians believed that many Christian martyrs were killed there. And so you wouldn't touch it. Fast forward another few generations and people don't necessarily believe that anymore, but now they're interested in the Colisseum for its historical importance. The guys who are hired by rich folks in places like Europe to go get them antiques and artifacts is called a "treasure hunter" It's interesting how the same bunch of rocks can be perceived in such different ways over the centuries.
