Abilade's Autobiography

Abilade writes this when he's abbot of a monastery on the west coast of Brittany. It's very unusual in the 12th century for anybody to write an autobiography. The theme that Abilade takes is that he will show his misfortunes and calamities are much greater than anybody else's. And so then he gives an account of his life in the light of a series of calamities - castrated, condemned as heiratic,. Now final calamity: dreadful monks who are beating him up or threatening to kill him.
