The decision to hire Bell was a cause of disagreement between Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton. Floyd would himself soon become a staff songwriter at Stacks. By this point, Redding was becoming hugely rich from his concert appearances in album sales but still hadn't had a top 20 pop hit. He needed to break the white market. It's around this time that Redding did something which seems completely out of character, but which really must be mentioned given that with very few exceptions everyone in his life talks about him as some kind of saint.
