Gloria Steinem named him as a hero of the women's movement. In 1975 he suggested a trial separation, but it soon became clear that this was not a trial so much as a bridge to something else. When the cameras were on, Ben tried to bully them into acting like a happy family. Jane Spock has made the most essential contribution and graciously gave up four evenings a week for two years while I wrote and erased and wrote again. It was far too little, way too late.
