The biggest reasons why things typically don't look nice when you don't know what you're necessarily doing there is almost always like spacing. So if you're not going to be using a straight up CSS framework, you can take a type scale and get your typography all nailed down with a type scale. I would probably recommend not developing that system yourself until you really are comfortable with it. But you could, if you want to, learn that type of thing as well.
