The Importance of Cleverness in War Planning

I was struck by kind of the inconsistency with the way that the historiographical debate views kind of the military pessimists. For example, we excoriate George McClellan because he thought he was outnumbered and he blew his opportunity to potentially win the war in 1862 during the peninsula campaign. On the other hand, we have folks like Eric Shinseki and the lead up to Iraq who felt that more troops would be needed. So it's a ying and yang of military planning that you always need to ask what could go wrong, but you always need To try to outthink the enemy and do something clever they don't expect.
