The Physical Topology of the Power Grid

The power grid was built around connecting natural resources to places where you would want to use electricity. It's a system that has evolved over decades in response to things like population growth, electrification and the increased demand for electricity. A lot of behavior on the power grid is around choices people have made about what voltage do we want this line to be? How much power do we want it to carry? There are upper bounds for how much power a line can carry before bad things start happening.
