I didn't get on with my younger sister, who was the closest in age to me. We shared a bedroom for about 15 years. I think when you have so many in a family, you just kind of balkanize in a sense. And I was a fourth child, like Madonna, Madonna's fourth child. So she was very busy. She would spend hours marking her pupils work,. Let alone looking after, you know, eight children. There is possibly some truth in that observation, I think. But it wasn't felt rather than discussed in the family. You don't grow up with a strong black consciousness, for example.
