The ancient east made this breathing process, which is essentially a bodily function, into a conscious proces. They would breathe in, hold it and breathe out according to a specific rule. While doing this, they arranged their bodies in a certain way. The legs and arms had to be held in certain positions. That is the path of one's breath through the physical organism. Those who reached for human perfection sat with their legs crossed beneath them.
