I was a pretty cunning novelist and can manipulate people. I never felt it was fair to a reader or a director to give stage directions as it were. So I kind of eased my way into what turned out to be the great love of my life, writing films. If you write a novel, you control everything. But when you give over a script, when they're actually directing it, instead of having him do whatever you thought they should do, they make him do something completely different.
