The Cost of Living in the Early Gold Rush Years

In 1856, Levi Strauss shipped over $200,000 in treasure in New York worth an astonishing $5 million today. The California Board of Equalization published a list of the city's personal property assessments in the August edition of the San Francisco evening. In August 1857, he ranges to ship goods, gold, and it says it's worth nearly $2 million. And even with all these expenses, Levi's business is doing fantastically well. He was making a great amount of progress in just a few short years.
