For someone like Auden, it seems like he could use their example as kind of a springboard for his own thought. He was absolutely a boracious reader and totally promiscuous in the things that he read. The reason that that experience repeats itself so frequently is that he was able to disentangle the important point from whatever larger, brand, explanatory scheme that was attached to them.
