Data lineage is based on metadata, right? What is metadata? Metadata is basically data about the data. A business glossary can be used to do the vertical lineage because you link your business terms then to data elements in the real world. You link your tomatoes to their particular brand of a tomato or to the end product. And based on those links, you can do the lineage.
