Andre Gamless says his PhD was a waste of time in terms of human progress. But it gave him an opportunity to study physics more broadly, condense metaphysics and pick up some experimental skills. His wife Arina Grigorieva is also a physicist at Manchester University. She didn't share the Nobel Prize because she was dealing with their daughter rather than scientific endeavors.
