Is There a Future for AI?

Technology is giving life the potential to flourish like never before. But where do we want to go with it? What specific what kind of future do we want? Low tech is suicide in a cosmic perspective, right? Because if we don't go far beyond today's technology, the question is not whether humanity is going to go extinct but merely whether we'll get taken out by the next killer asteroid.
