Did Thomas Face Racial Animus?

There were too many different kinds of dark skinned individuals who had been integrated into russian prial society for anyone to make a big deal out of thomas's black skin. In the 18 nineties, in london and paris, black people were still quite rare, and there was no animus against them. So it wasn't that the russians were somehow inoculated a priori, and always against racism. It's just that in thomas's day, there weren't enough black people for there to be any kind of a widespread reaction.
