The Angel of the Lord, Not God, God Didn't Call Him From Heaven
The angel of the Lord has only appeared twice in the Bible up to this point. If we really knew the Bible, we would think of two other passages that have come before. The idea here is that just as the angel preserved ishmael, when ishmael twice was cast out in the wilderness and God provided for him, so he preserves Isaac. And if there's going to be another parallel with ishmael later on in this passage 2, I didn't look at the cross-references; you can't look there.
