The History of the Catholic Church

In 1440, Johannes Gutenberg started working on the printing press. He was able to print easily and cheaply so-called indulgences for the Catholic Church. These were pieces of paper which when filled in and personalized, allowed officials of the Church to sell written forgiveness for a crime. Martin Luther's famous 95 theses could be swiftly and economically printed and distributed. This was, in effect, the start of the Protestant Revolution, or Protestantism.
