Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested during civil rights protests in Birmingham, Alabama. On his second day in jail, he was passed a full-page letter about the protests signed by a group of white clergymen. This letter advised protesters that their actions were unwise and untimely. The result was King's famous letter from Birmingham Jail.
