Main's new farm buys eight percent of the total glass eel catch, and she turns that into half a million pounds of eel. 95 % of eels eaten in america will be grown overseas, most likely in china,. even if they were fished in maine. Even on a bad year, it seems to work out. Everybody seems all right.
Where eels come from is a surprisingly difficult question to answer, in large part because scientists have never actually seen them reproduce in the wild. Gastropod explains why eels are somehow still so mysterious.
