The Scarcity of War
The scale of fairness shifts from an objective baseline to one of relative deprivation. He who is deprived of little lives like a prince in contrast with the double amputees of the blind, yet all who live at all emerge with an equal share of something infinitely and objectively valuable. The state and plunder seems more appealing to every soldier than taking the slip. Until the end, each soldier presses on retreats, thrusts, fires, crouches, runs, weeps, pollers, with no real sense of whether he is victor or loser.
