How to Draw a Number

The classic seven segment figure of eight was first used in 1903. To make this work, you have to have seven things you can turn on or off to make every single number. With LCD, you need to either be backlit or just be an ambient light. The diagonals mean you can do all the letters of the alphabet. And so there's this constant balance between having fewer segments that turn on and off and how readable it is.
