Decades ago, Christian philosopher and apologist Francis Schaeffer warned that evangelical Christianity was heading toward what he called “The Great Evangelical Disaster.” He believed that as Christians increasingly accommodated the spirit of the age, compromised biblical authority, and abandoned objective truth, the consequences would be devastating. Looking at the church today, was Schaeffer right?
In this episode, Alisa sits down with Dr. Bruce Little, professor emeritus of philosophy and director of the Francis A. Schaeffer Collection at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, to explore Schaeffer’s life, legacy, and remarkably relevant warnings. They discuss how theological compromise takes root in churches, the influence of postmodernism and pragmatism, the dangers of adopting secular business and leadership models, and the growing tribalism within evangelical Christianity. They also examine current debates over biblical inerrancy and why seemingly small accommodations can have significant consequences for future generations.
Are we witnessing the Great Evangelical Disaster Schaeffer warned about, or are we already living in its aftermath? And what can Christians learn from his unwavering commitment to truth?
