The Balance Sheet Is a Free Parameter in the Operating System

If you look at all of the monthly growth that those balance sheets have done over the years, I get about 1% a month or 12.8% compounded per year. Those countries like the US, not all countries have switched to the operating system that we have. And this is the key. No matter how big the Federal Reserve's balance sheet gets, there is some setting of its interest rate on reserves in the fund and overnight repo repurchase rate which will keep inflation on target. In this new system, the Fed could cause excessive inflation even if it stopped growth in the balance sheet for some time.
