Kumar and his mom have a special relationship. Part of that is cultural; in Malaysia, family elders are often taken care of by relatives not nursing homes. After Kumar's return home to Boston, after his father's death, he and his mom are messaging each other multiple times a day. They spend a lot of time talking about the family dog, whom Mina refers to as her daughter. In 2019, when Mina comes to Boston for the holidays, she brings Patch with her.
