Major Houghton Park spent three hours smoking tobacco with the Africans and listening to the stories of the Mandinka. The mumbo jumbo was devised to humiliate and punish wives who got out of line according to their husbands. On December 8th, 1795, Park arrived in a town called Kohler. Here he witnessed a strange ritual that was in process in the town,. And thus we have the term mumboJumbo which is derived from this description by Park.
